Tennis is my favourite sport to watch. And a few weeks ago, during the Australian Tennis Open, I witnessed the perfect example of why, in any area of your life, it’s essential to execute your well constructed strategic plan effectively if you want to succeed.
Just one month prior in December 2015, Daria Gavrilova, or Dasha as she’s affectionately known, went from being an unknown to winning our hearts as she partnered with Nick Kyrgios to win the Hopman Cup for Australia.
Then in January she got off to a winning start smashing her way through the first week of the Australian Open beating some more experienced players along the way.
When she emerged to play Carla Suárez Navarro, she got an incredible lead early and much to everyone’s surprise took the first set 6-1. As was pointed out by the commentators, this was due to her well executed plan that she had developed with her coach to specifically beat Suarez Navarro. In fact, the cameras even zoomed in on the plan that was hand written and underneath her chair as she went out on court.
However, at the beginning of the second set, Dasha lost focus and failed to stick to the plan. Unfortunately, it was all downhill from there as Suarez Navarro gained momentum and confidence and got into an unstoppable rhythm to beat Dasha convincingly in 3 sets. She did not have the maturity or experience to get back to the plan that she had executed so efficiently in the first set.
I saw this as the perfect example as to why it’s critical to not only have a strategic plan, but to focus and execute it effectively in order to achieve your goals and more than you ever imagined possible.
